Architects Scottish Borders
Founded by experienced architects Chris Matson and Gill Mourier, Matson Mourier Architects provides thoughtful, practical architectural design across the Scottish Borders.
Experienced Architects Serving the Scottish Borders
Matson Mourier Architects is a Midlothian-based architectural practice working with homeowners, businesses and developers across the Scottish Borders.
We support projects from early feasibility and site assessment through concept design, planning and detailed development to completion, providing experienced guidance at every stage.
Our approach starts with understanding the site, its setting and what you want to achieve. We consider opportunities such as views, orientation and space alongside practical requirements including access, planning, functionality and budget.
Whether you're planning a bespoke new-build home or a commercial project, we aim to make the architectural process clear, collaborative and carefully considered from the outset.
Experience
We are experienced architects working across the Scottish Borders, delivering architectural design from early feasibility and masterplanning through to completion. We assess site potential, layouts, floor space and context to create considered new-build and commercial schemes shaped around your vision.
Residential Architecture
From bespoke new-build homes to sensitive alterations and listed building projects, we design considered residential spaces around the people who will live in them. We look carefully at the setting, layout, natural light and everyday functionality to create homes that combine character, comfort and practicality.
Commercial Architecture
We provide architectural design for workplaces, retail and hospitality spaces, mixed-use developments, refurbishments and other commercial projects. Our approach balances operational requirements with thoughtful design, creating adaptable spaces that support businesses, their people and future growth.

Our Approach to Architecture
Great design begins with understanding.
We approach every project individually, taking time to understand what our clients want to achieve and how the design should respond to its site, surroundings, budget and purpose.
Across the Scottish Borders, this can mean making the most of views, landscape and natural light while carefully considering access, materials, planning and the character of the surrounding area.
We balance creativity with practicality and technical expertise, paying close attention to layout and detail to create buildings that feel considered, functional and appropriate to their setting.
From the first conversation through to completion, Chris and Gill provide experienced guidance to help clients make informed decisions with confidence.
Our Design Philosophy
Great design begins with understanding. Every project is shaped around its setting, purpose and the people who will use it, with no one-size-fits-all approach. Across the Scottish Borders, we combine creativity, practicality and technical expertise to create new-build homes and commercial spaces that respond sensitively to their surroundings. Careful attention to landscape, layout, materials and detail helps us create architecture that feels considered, distinctive and enduring, while remaining personal to each client and their vision.
